PCN code 52G: meaning and how to appeal
Moving trafficMoving traffic / bus laneCan be camera-enforced
Official description: “Failing to comply with a prohibition on certain types of vehicle (goods vehicles exceeding the maximum gross weight indicated)”
What it means
You drove where your type of vehicle was prohibited - for example a 'motor vehicles prohibited' sign at a school street or traffic filter, or a weight limit for goods vehicles. The suffix says which vehicles were banned.
What the suffix G means: 52G is used for weight limits on goods vehicles (for example a 7.5-tonne limit). These usually have an 'except for loading' exemption, so if you were delivering to or collecting from a property inside the restricted area, keep the paperwork. See the main code 52 page for the other suffixes.
How much is a code 52G PCN?
Bus lane and moving traffic contraventions have a single penalty level.
| Area | Penalty | Paid early (50%) | After charge certificate (+50%) |

| Outside London (band 2) | £70 | £35 | £105 |

Outside London, only councils that have been given moving traffic enforcement powers under Part 6 of the Traffic Management Act 2004 can issue these PCNs, and most of them use £70.

Common grounds to appeal a code 52G PCN
- Your vehicle was exempt (for example you held a permit or exemption for a school street, or the vehicle was 'except for loading').
- The restriction was timed and you passed outside its hours.
- The signs were missing, obscured, did not give enough warning or did not match the traffic order.
- Outside London: it was your first contravention at a camera site in its first six months, so a warning notice should have been issued.
Also check the PCN itself: are the date, time, location, vehicle and code correct, and was it served on time? Errors can support the statutory grounds, such as procedural impropriety or 'the contravention did not occur'.
Evidence to gather
- Ask to view the camera footage or for still images - you are entitled to this for camera PCNs (in England outside London, regulation 3(3) of SI 2022/576).
- Dash-cam footage of the approach and the signs.
- Photos of the signs and road markings from the driver's view on approach.
- Any exemption or permit confirmation from the council.
